During the first week of school, students will be expected to turn in work to their ELA teacher. Students should read two different books and have a different project for each book.

  1. Write an advertisement for the book. Include a description of the contents and information about the author.
  2. Draw a poster depicting a character or an event from the book.
  3. Keep a reading journal about your reactions to the book. Include at least ten entries.
  4. Create a graphic organizer on a book showing the characters, setting, and major events.
  5. Write a newspaper story as if the book’s action were a news story. Make sure to include a headline for your story.
  6. Write a poem based on events/ characters from the book or on your reactions to the book.
  7. Design a book web page. Include information about the book, art, author information, etc.
  8. Interview a character from the book. Write the dialogue of questions and responses from the interview.
  9. Design and draw a new book jacket. Include a description of the contents and information about the author.
  10. Write and submit a review for the Richland County Public Library’s web page. Print a copy of your work. [www.richland.lib.sc.us]
  11. Put yourself in the place of one of the main characters in the book and write five dated journal entries that he/she might have written.
  12. Write a travel brochure for the major setting in the book. Include information of interest.
  13. Write a letter to one of the characters in the book explaining your opinion of a decision they made or an action they took. Explain why you would have made a different decision or taken a different action.
  14. Choose a memorable scene from the book and write it in the form of a drama. Include a list of characters and stage directions.
  15. Write a letter nominating a book from the summer reading list for the Book of the Month Club. Explain why the book should be chosen.

    Earn your way to an ice cream sundae reward. Tickets will be awarded for each completed project turned in on time.
    1st ticket = bowl of ice cream;
    2nd ticket = sprinkles; 3rd ticket = chocolate syrup; 4th ticket = whipped cream.

 BOOK REPORT INSTRUCTIONS (for AAP and  Regular students):

On the first day of school, students will be expected to turn in a paper either typed or written in ink listing the following information to their ELA teacher.  AAP students should have a report for two books, while Regular students should have a report for one book.

 PAPER REQUIREMENTS:

(1)  the title of the book read
(2)  the author
(3)  a list of the main characters in the book with a description of each
(4)  a description of the setting (times and place)
(5)  a paragraph explaining the main conflict in the book (struggle between two opposing forces)
(6)  a sentence explaining the theme/lesson in the book (what you learned from reading the book)
(7)  a paragraph explaining how the conflict was resolved
(8)  a paragraph explaining why you liked or disliked the book (give  specific reasons)
*Paragraphs should be a minimum of five sentences.
