All About It

What is a Math Auction?
A math auction has the same concept as any other auction. Using money to bid on items you want to own. Only in this auction the bidders will be the 8th grade students. The money will be auction dollars the students earn. The actual auction will be a silent auction held in May 2007. The auction coordinator, instead of actual auction dollars being issued to each student, will track the student’s earnings.
Why a Math Auction?
The concept of an auction is an effort to incorporate an incentive program that reinforces the basic skills of mathematics. Too often when students move on to complex concepts in mathematics they loose many of the basic skills. We are all familiar with the saying “if you don’t use it you loose it”. And besides, auctions are fun! The students will earn auction dollars during the second and third nine weeks. These dollars will be awarded from all academic subjects, which allows every student a wide variety of avenues to be successful. Students understand money. They know the more auction dollars they earn increases their opportunity to bid on a more valuable item. No certain curriculum is required or used. This will allow the opportunity for all academic teachers the benefit of supporting the auction in some way.
How does a Math Auction work?
Students were informed that we will are having an auction and of the details and procedures for earning auction dollars at the beginning of second nine weeks. The event in May will be done in the form of a silent auction. The students will have the opportunity to view the prize video and make their bids. All prizes are also displayed on the 8th grade hall on the wall by room 331.
How to earn the Auction Dollars?
Each student will have the opportunity to earn auction dollars according to the following details. The maximum a student can earn for the year will be $40,500. This will allow them to earn up to $20,250 during the second and third nine-week periods. The fourth nine weeks will be used to prepare for the event in May.
